Course Description
FRENCH
French 1-2 (Beginner)

This is a beginning course that emphasizes the development of communication skills and awareness of target language cultures through the activites and materials used to develop the language skills. Emphasis is placed on the listening and speaking skills with students being able to read and write materials already learned orally. The use of French to respond naturally and spontaneously in real situations is an integral part of this course.

French 3-4 (Second Year of the Language)

This is a continuation and expansion of skills mastered in the first year with continued emphasis on the listening and speaking skills. Students are encouraged to begin to create with the language, first orally and then in writing, expanding on the high frequency situations of first year including everyday routines, common events, and narrations of past and future actions.

Prerequisite: Pass 2 with grades of C or better

French 5-6 (Third Year of the Language)

Prerequisite: Pass 4 with grades of C or better

CHINESE
Chinese 1-2 Mandarin (Beginner)

This course emphasizes the learning of Mandarin, known in China as “Pu Tong Hua,” considered the official language of China. Student in this course learn basic skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing. In addition, students will participate in class activities that will increase their knowledge and understanding of the Chinese culture. The Pinyin system for pronunciation and tone discrimination will be utilized.

Chinese 3-4 Mandarin (Intermediate to Advanced Users of the Target Language)

Students write paragraphs; learn about handling survival situations with complications; learn to read and write paragraph-based material of a factual nature, from narrations and description. Students begin to develop skills to handle written and spoken “shu-mian-yu” language in reading and listening comprehension. Students begin to develop abilities to produce “shu-mian-yu” in writing.

Chinese 5-6 Mandarin (Advanced to Superior)

Students will be handling factual as well as abstract, familiar, unfamiliar, and professional topics. Students provide hypothesis and supporting opinions in the language. There will be more concentrated studies on more “shu-mian-yu” -based materials and on a wider range of topics. Students handle authentic language materials on literature, culture, etc. (Student will work with level 3 of the textbook assigned.)

Chinese Honors (Mandarin)

Students will be handling factual as well as abstract, familiar, unfamiliar, and professional topics. Students provide hypothesis and supporting opinions in the language. There will be more concentrated studies on more “shu-mian-yu” -based materials and on a wider range of topics. Students handle authentic language materials on literature, culture, etc. (Student will work with level 4 of the textbook assigned.)

AP Chinese Language and Culture (Mandarin)
This course is comparable to a fourth semester  (or equivalent) college/university course in Mandarin Chinese. This AP course prepares students to demonstrate their level of Chinese proficiency across the three communicative modes (interpersonal, interpretative, presentational, and the five goal areas (communication, cultures, connections, comparisons, and communities) as outlined in the Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century.
SPANISH
Spanish 1-2  (First Year of the Language for Non-native Users of Spanish)

This is a beginning course that stresses the development of communication skills in Spanish, and awareness and understanding of the cultures in different Spanish-speaking countries. Emphasis is placed on the acquisition of everyday vocabulary and basic grammar structures. Functions in the areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing will be developed by using the Spanish language to respond naturally and spontaneously in real life situations.

Spanish 3-4 (Second Year of the Language for Non-Native Users of Spanish)

Continuation and expansion of skills mastered in the first year, with the emphasis on listening and speaking skills. AP Spanish Language is intended for students who wish to develop their proficiency in all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

AP Spanish Literature (For Native-like Users of the Spanish Language)

AP Spanish Literature is designed to be comparable to a third-year college/university introduction to Hispanic literature course. This course introduces students to the diverse literature written in Spanish from the Medieval to the 20th century.
