Course Description
|
| Ninth and Tenth Grade English |
|
In those courses students will be utilizing the Holt Textbook as well as the accompying Holt Grammar Handbook. Throughtout these coursesd students will be learning about characterization, theme, mood, and the development on the plot. These courses will be following the Califiornia State Standards. Students will be practicing and preparing for the Califiornia High School State Exit Examination. While preparing for this exam students will also be reading short stories, poetry, nonfiction, and novels. |
| American Literature |
|
In this 11th grade courses the students will learn about the variety of genres that have been written by American authors. Some of the topics that will be discussed and explored are the American Dream, racism, identity, and personal struggles. American Literature will be taught according to the Califiornia State Standards. Students will write analytical essay, persuasive essays and conduct a reserach project. In addition, students will read many pieces of literature some of which are 'The Great Gatsby', 'To Kill a Mockingbird', 'Catcher in the Rye' and 'Sula'. |
| European Literature |
|
European Literature will follow the Califiornia State Standards. The 12th graders in this course will read a variety of genres and complete a senior project. Seniors will explore many topics some of which are mob mentality, women's rights, civil rights, and humanity. The students enrolled in this course will read many pieces of literature. Some of which will include 'Beowulf', 'The Canterbury Tales', 'Hamlet', and 'Jane Eyre'. |
| Advanced Placement Language and Composition |
|
This intensive year-long English course is your opportunity to learn to write for college. In the process of reading, writing and discussing texts, you will learn to write for different audiences and purposes with greater confidence and competence. You will also prepare to take the Advanced Placement Exam for English Language and Composition near the end of the school years. If you receive a passing score on the exam, you can earn college credit,scholarship and even recognition from your peers, community and college admissions committees. This course will be one of the most challenging courses you have ever taken. It's because it is a writing-focused course, it is excellent preparation for your future college career. | Advanced Placement Literature and Composition |

This challenging course will provide the opportunity to earn college credit while attending Thurgood Marshall Academic High School. This class will follow the guidelines that are followed nationally. In AP Literature and Composition you will be preparing for college and the nationwide Advance Placement Examination. As a student enrolled in this course you will learn to analyze literature and write about your analysis. Some of this works that will be read in this care 'Macbeth', 'Jane Eyre', 'Great Expectations' and 'Pride and Prejudice'. |
| Journalism |

This elective courses is for students who are interested in learning the skills of interviewing, investigating, photography, newspaper layout, and reporting. Student enrolled in this course will gain writing skills as well as the opportunity to be published in the school's newspaper. |

This course focuses on learning English throught listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Listening and speaking skills are developed in a student-centered, interactive approach. Reading skills include vocabulary and the understanding of literature.Writiing skills include sentence and paragraph writing,as well as spellling and grammar. Student in this class must be currently enrolled in an ELD reading class. |

This course focuses learning English throught listening, speaking, reading, and writing. There is a strong focus on reading skills which include pronunciation vocabulary and comprehension of literature. There is an emphasis on nonfiction works and adapted novels. Students enrolled in this class must also be enrolled in an ELD class. |
| ELD 7 |
| This course focuses on the acquistion on English throught the integartion of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Listening and speaking skills are developed in a student-centered, interactive approach. Reading skills include the development of a vocabulary and comprehension in a literature-based program. Writing skills include sentence and paragraph forms, usage, spelling. Students enrolled in this class should also be enrolled in either a Sheltered 9th grade Englsih class, 10th grade English class, American Literature, or a European Literature class. |
| Creative Writing |
| Students will be given the tools to execute effective writing, such as vocabulary building, exposure to wide varieties of literature, correct writing mechanics, the various writing styles and when to use them, poetic devices, and other techniques. |
